Why and How to Blur You House ?

Blurring your house on Google Maps serves multiple purposes beyond just privacy. It enhances security by preventing potential thieves from scoping out vulnerabilities or identifying easy access points. Plus, it shields you from targeted marketing efforts based on visible home improvement needs and mitigates the risk of neighborly disputes stemming from overly curious neighbors. Once you request Google to blur your home, the effect is permanent, ensuring continued privacy in Google Street View. It does not impede emergency services from finding the house.

How to Blur Steps

Blurring your house on Google Maps can be a prudent step to protect your security and privacy. When you blur your home, it becomes less identifiable in Google Street View. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open Google Maps on your computer (unfortunately, this process doesn’t work on smartphone apps).
  2. Search for your home address.
  3. A picture of your house will likely appear. Click on that picture.
  4. Enter Street View mode by dragging the small yellow human-shaped icon found in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  5. Rotate the view using arrow keys until you can see your home right in front of you.
  6. Click “Report a problem” at the lower right corner of the screen.
  7. In the “Request blurring” section, select “My home” and provide additional details if needed.
  8. Keep in mind that once you request Google to blur your home, there’s no reversing the process. Your home will be permanently blurred in Google Street View.

  • Security: Blurring prevents potential thieves from scoping out security vulnerabilities or identifying easy access points.
  • Marketing: Businesses won’t be able to target you based on visible home improvement needs.
  • Neighborly disputes: Snoopy neighbors won’t be able to identify code violations and report you to local authorities.

  3. First Responders’ Training: Firefighters, police officers, and paramedics are trained to locate addresses efficiently. They rely on their training, local knowledge, and communication with dispatch to find your home.
  4. Street Signs and House Numbers: Street signs, house numbers, and other visible markers help emergency responders identify your location. Even if your house is blurred on Google Maps, these physical markers remain unaffected.

It offers peace of mind while navigating the digital world without hindering the crucial task of emergency responders in locating you during emergencies. By ensuring that your house number is clearly visible from the street, you can help their swift response when needed.
